Conrad latest Blog: New sponsor, one message and a simple goal

It’s been a busy time. The Easter break with Vikki and the girls camping in north Cornwall was heaven. We felt like we deserved a good break, even if only for a few days and didn’t the sun shine! So with the recent news that we have secured a multi-year agreement with WWF to expand the Blue Mile – Race for the Environment across the UK, we now can officially release our second major news event with the welcome announcement that DMS (Disc Manufacturing Services) the UK’s leading CD, DVD and Vinyl company are to become my title sponsor for La Solitaire du Figaro.

Dave Summers (DMS Managing Director) contacted me just after the finish of my Vendee Globe in 2005 and later that year, he very kindly agreed to manufacture my DVD about the race. He’s a great business man and has an eye for doing deals; he’s also a keen Hobie sailor. In 2007, Dave offered to support our Blue Project in its infancy; he also supported the Archipelago Raid and the Extreme 40.

In early 2008, Dave started a programme to reduce the amount of plastic packaging used in manufacturing CD’s and DVD’s and since then has weaned many of his customers off plastic packaging as well (from 90% to now just 10%). Business is stronger than ever, without the need to harm the planet. A great lesson there for business and consumers.

So I’m here, back in France to take part in the second qualifier for La Solitaire du Figaro and will be sailing under the colourful banner of DMS with a core message appropriately wrapped around the hull (and hopefully not the keel) of PACK IT IN! to encourage business to reduce the amount of plastic packaging, much of which ends up floating in our oceans.

The relationship with DMS is important on two counts: We both care about sailing in a clean ocean. We also care about results and turning this Figaro season into a campaign that is capable of winning the Vendee Globe. Now that’s a big leap and certainly one that is going to require a lot more resource, but that’s our simple goal. So if you’re a brand that is looking to partner with a sailing project with an impressive track record, we’d like to offer you a slot onboard for 2011 as a free taster.

Now there’s a great business offer…
