What do less points make? The big prize!

The fourth and final round in the Royal Southern Yacht Club’s Summer Series takes place over the weekend of September 8th-9th and, amongst the racing highlights, this is the decider for who walks away with the title ‘Champion of Champions’ and one of the most valuable and glamorous prizes ever provided by the Club, courtesy of Barbados Tourism Authority and Mount Gay Rum.

Spread over four Regatta weekends held in May, June, July and September, the Royal Southern Summer Series provides competitive and top-class racing for IRC Classes, Sportboats, One-design and Club Class yachts.

At the September Regatta, the Royal Southern will also host the XOD Class and J/80s for their National Championship. There are prizes for class winners each weekend and trophies awarded for the overall series. Entries are always welcome for single Regattas, but this season more than any other, it has really been worth entering all four Regattas.

It’s all about mastery of speed, tactics and staying power and you have to be in it to win it. The entrant who has started all four Regattas and been most successful across the Series, attracting the least points against the biggest opposition in their respective classes, will walk away with the big prize and the title ‘Champion of Champions’.

Around 40 helmsmen from six classes were originally in with a fighting chance but the process of racing in many different conditions across the first three Regattas has inevitably shaken the fleets down.

Going into the final decider, the helmsmen in with a real chance include Michael Bartholomew (Tokoloshe) and Dave & Kirsty Apthorp (J Dream) from IRC 1 and Neville Hodkin (Extra Djinn) and Andrew Given (High Tension) in IRC 2 but the front runners who have so far posted the lowest points scores against the biggest opposition include Mike Holmes (Jika Jika) in IRC 3 and Lisa Childerley (Palassie) amongst the XODs.

The Prize

The Royal Southern Yacht Club’s 2012 Summer Series winner will be officially announced at the Club’s Prizegiving in November.

They and their guest will enjoy flights with British Airways and accommodation at Mango Bay and attend the 2013 Mount Gay Rum Round Barbados Race Week in January. The prize includes invitations to the hottest social events during Race Week, an invitation to watch, or participate in the Race on January 21st, and a visit to the Mount Gay Rum distillery.
