Built at Hakes Marine in New Zealand and launched in 2007 as Ecover 3, the design of this cutting edge Open 60 benefited from a six month research and development program undertaken in partnership with the internationally renowned Wolfson Unit of Southampton University.  Innovative appendage configurations, including the fitting of an interceptor system (resulting in hull drag reduction of up to 16%) were seen on a sailing yacht for the first time as a result of an un-paralleled seventh and one third scale Open 60 model test program. No expense was spared either during the construction of the yacht which was built in a female mould and featured the latest in titanium ram design, Kevlar honeycomb pre-preg carbon construction and the highest specification of hardware and equipment.

Ecover 3 was launched only weeks before the start of the 2007 TJV, a race which she completed in 5th place despite suffering significant problems with her power and electrical systems.  In her next event, the 2008/2009 Vendee Globe, Mike raced with the front pack and was leading this toughest of events when the yacht was dismasted during a squall south of Australia. The yacht’s first Trans-Atlantic podium finish was a third place in the 2009 Transat Jacques, in which the yacht was raced without a sponsor.

In 2010, the wind energy company Gamesa came onboard as supporters and a re-evaluation of the design was undertaken in a number of areas. As a result, Gamesa underwent a significant refit at Green Marine in the UK. Primary work undertaken included fitting tiller steering, a new cockpit and coachroof, as well as a significantly lighter Future Fibres triple spreader classic rig. As a result of these modifications Gamesa entered the 2012/2013 Vendee Globe with a very high power to weight ratio, displacing only 8000kg and with an IMOCA measured righting moment of just under 34,000 kgm, some 2000 kgm more than allowed by the rule for the latest generation of IMOCA 60s.

Gamesa finished sixth in the 2012/2013 Vendee Globe, skippered by Mike Golding to his record third Vendee finish. Mike maintains the yacht has more potential to be released still, with further development of the sail wardrobe possible. Meticulously prepared, she is in very good condition following her Vendee, must be viewed to appreciate and is presented for sale exclusively by Owen Clarke/Boatshed Performance. The yacht can be purchased in two formats; IMOCA certified ready to race boat only, or as a complete racing package including container, spares and negotiable forms of on-going race support if requested.
