Ryan Breymaier on Maserati: Running out of trades

Onboard Maserati we are enjoying our last day of tradewinds sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. The wind has backed a lot as we approach a small front/ low pressure center, and we will have to pick our way along to get through it as quickly as possible.

The last 2 or 3 days have been a great ride, in flat water; 14-18 knots with the spinnaker and full main. It is easy for us to average close to 20 knots in these conditions, and we have gotten south quicker than we all thought possible. The wind went aft early, which was appreciated by everyone as it kept us dry on deck.

Going forwards, we are going to get our last freshwater showers in this front before it gets too cold as we roll south.

After, we move into the belt of more active low and high pressure systems to negotiate before Cape Horn. We will be back to the FRO and staysail combination, and close reaching a bit as well. The routing has us at the Horn on the 22nd, and we have the latest charts showing the location of the icebergs in the area for when we arrive...

The next few days should be interesting, cooler, and with plenty of sail changes to keep things interesting and us all busy on deck!
