Bright sunshine and light winds greeted a fleet of 13 Larks on the 1st day of the annual Cartoon trophy weekend.

The shifty conditions certainly seemed to suit Harry Pynn & Clare Gosling who left the fleet trailing in their wake, winning race 1 in commanding fashion. Behind them Chris & Cathy Fish played the shifts well up the last beat to take second, with Alan Krailing & Gemma Thompson coming home in 3rd.

Race 2 was held back to back after race 1 with Pynn/Gosling once again hit the front, from Krailing/Thompson, the Fish’s and Bob & Kelsey Suggitt chasing hard. Pynn/Gosling & Krailing/Thompson played Waldringfield tricky tides well to break clear, with Krailing/Thompson just snatching victory on the running finish, from Pynn/Gosling & the Fish’s 3rd.

After Waldringfield legendary “Curry Night” on Saturday evening, the competitors were greeted by much better sailing conditions on Sunday, with a force 2-3 blowing from the Northwest.

In race 3 some dubious navigation from team Fish, allowed Tony Fraser & Natalie Bannister and Pynn, now crewed by Ross Power to break clear from the rest. As their personal battle developed, Krailing/Thompson chased hard and were eventually able to close the gap, snatching the lead at the last mark, which they held to the finish, from Fraser/Bannister 2nd and Pynn/Power 3rd.

In the final race with the wind building to force 4 and some very big gusts, an early capsize from Krailing/Thompson looked to have put pay to their chances, with Pynn/Power leading. However Pynn/Power then proceeded to follow suit on a tricky gybe. This left Fraser/Bannister to lead the way, carrying through their strong showing from the previous race. Matt White & Clare La Forge were chasing hard in 2nd until another uncharacteristic capsize put pay to their chances. Meanwhile, the Fish’s, having recovered from their misfortune in race 3, were screaming through the fleet, eventually snatching the lead at the last mark and going on to take a narrow victory from Fraser/Bannister in 2nd and Geoff Sinton and Charlotte Thubron showing their form with a 3rd.

Krailing/Thompson had done just enough in the earlier races to take the event with 2nd going to the Fish’s in a tie with Pynn split by the last race result.
