Win for Rag & Famish
Sunday April 3rd 2005, Author: Frank Quealey, Location: Australasia
John Harris'
Rag & Famish Hotel took out the final heat of the Australian 18 Footer League's Club Championship on Sydney Harbour today but it wasn't enough to give the team victory overall in the series.
Rag & Famish defeated Ssangyong Yandoo (John Winning) by 10secs with Fisher & Paykel (Andrew Cuddihy) a further 29secs back in third place. But it was a fourth placing to Omega Smeg (Daniel Phillips) which gave that team victory overall with a final points tally of 22.
Rag & Famish was second (on countback) with 24 points then followed Asko Appliances (Hugh Stodart) also on 24.
Today's race was sailed in a north west wind over a special windward-return course. Ssangyong Yandoo won the start but trailed Club Marine (John Winning Jr) at the windward mark. Ssangyong Yandoo grabbed the lead back downwind and led for the next lap of the course.
Rag & Famish came from fourth on the third windward leg to take the lead from Ssangyong Yandoo when Harris and his team made a great tactical move on the left hand side of the course.
Although the win was narrow the Rag & Famish victory was never really in doubt over the final lap of the course.
