Open meeting round up from 27/28 April
The big breezes on Sunday may have kept the International Canoes and most of the club racers on shore at Hayling Island SC, but the Optimist class is not so easily beaten.
Fifty-two Oppies entered the UK Southern Championship and Open Meeting and a three race series was completed on Sunday despite the 25 knot winds, which were gusting in the mid 30s.
The course was laid in the shallow area to the North of the club, off the east side of the island and provided a grandstand view for the watching parents.
Despite the strong winds and back to back racing there were remarkably few incidents and most managed to battle to the end and thanks to the excellent race and rescue teams.
Overall winner was Robert Claridge of Lymington YC who won the first race, then dropped down the field in the second which was won by James Murdock of Bowmore SC.
Claridge came back in the final race to finish second to Philip White of Papercourt SC and claim the title.
Murdock finished second overall, one point ahead of Sophie Ainsworth of Lymington YC.
