Open meeting round up from 27/28 April
Twenty-four boats from Exmouth to Bolton converged at West Oxfordshire Sailing Club on Saturday 27th April for the Supernova Open Meeting. Three races were held in blustery conditions that were notable for sudden gusts, lulls and shifts more than the overall strength of the breeze. Boats were planing one moment and stationary the next.
Tony Thresher, competing in a borrowed boat, proved a master on the upwind legs and won all three races with Mike Gibson eventually second in each race though not always at the front early on.
Mark Giles secured a third and fourth but retired in the last race while Leslie Arscott made up ground to fourth after a poor start in race one and after leading
race two dropped to third when a sudden gust caused a capsize.
Paul Edmondson was consistent with two fifth places and improved to fourth in the final race. Andy Flitcroft retired in the first race but an eighth and a third after leading race three for a while improved his overall position sixth.
After a sixth place in race one Mark Mason had a swim in race two which cost some time but recovered to mid fleet and was back up to sixth place in race three. Mason and Steve Hawley just missed the prizes with newcomers to the fleet Alan Price and Steve Weston not far behind.
David Everett won the personal handicap prize. David Rhymes proved a reduced rig was little if any slower upwind but lost out a bit off wind or in the lulls.
