Laser consider update of rule on rig controls

Laser are looking at adding blocks to the sail controls next season

The Laser Class Association has warned that blocks are still not allowed on the rig control lines.

In December 1999, the class members approved a general proposal to allow multi-block purchases for the cunningham, outhaul and kicker. The International Sailing Federation (ISAF) ruled that such a change could not be introduced before the 1st October 2000, to prevent significant rule changes before the 2000 Olympics. Some people have taken this to mean that with the completion of the Games, blocks are now allowed. This is incorrect.

Jeff Martin, Executive Secretary of the Laser Class Association, has pointed out that the Working Party has not completed its investigation nor made a final report to the World Council. And after that, the rule changes have to be submitted to the ISAF for their approval, together with a date for introduction.

When this approval process is completed, the District Officers will be informed and the introduction date published. Martin's guess as to the earliest date for completion of this process is the 1st April 2001.
