Level pegging with one race to go

Sam Crichton reports from the penultimate race in the Sydney 18ft skiff series

Sunday March 16th 2003, Author: Sam Crichton, Location: Australasia
With the current point score having both Total Recall and Casio Seapathfinder on equal points and caring exactly the same point score for the series the final race on March 23 will be the decider. Rag and Famish with its second win of the series is currently placed third in the point score.

The fleet sailed in light shifty Sou' East breezes that swung to the East and reached maximum strengths on 6 knots which allowed for those who picked the shifts to be able to move away from the rest of the fleet.

John Harris and crew Craig Ferris and Chris Cleary on Rag and Famish took the gun 4 mins ahead of Trevor Barnabas and crew of Matt Felton and Trent Barnabas on Omega Smeg who had their best race of the series finishing in second position. Rag and Famish began the race in the back of the fleet but made large gains on the leaders when they took advantage of some shifts that lifted them into the placings and then once in the lead they stayed there and continued to increase their lead from two to four minutes.

The final race for the series and the season for the 18s will be on 23 March with a larger spectator ferry going out to follow the action. The ferry will leave Double Bay wharf which is being demolished and repaired on the flowing Monday.
