Young sailors from all over Wales will be competing at the Volvo WYA Welsh Open Youth Championships at Pwllheli Sailing Club this weekend. The sailors will be fresh and eager to compete following the success of the Volvo RYA National Championships in Weymouth two weeks ago.

The WYA High Performance Manager, Tim Hall, would like to encourage young sailors under the age of 19 to join in the event. Classes will include Optimist, Topper, Laser Radial and General Handicap.

"The Volvo RYA Zone Championships are a most important breakthrough for UK sailing. The Championships provide a unique opportunity for all of our Youth
and Junior sailors to race in a competitive environment. The Championships provide an essential mechanism to identify and develop our future Olympians from the grass roots of sailing," said Tim Hall.

The aim of the Championships is to give young sailors the opportunity to compete in a professional managed and high level event without the need to travel long distances. By raising the standards and the support available in each region, standards across the country will inevitably rise.

Talent Scouts will be on the look out to identify young sailors with natural ability and potential for a place in the Welsh National Youth and Junior Squad.
