Beloe wins Phantom open

Simon Childs reports from Stone Sailing Club

Tuesday October 22nd 2002, Author: Simon Childs, Location: United Kingdom
The Phantom fleet finished the season with the re-run of the Stone Open that was blown away earlier in the year. A quality fleet with most of the key players present sailed six races over the two days, waiting for the forecast gales to arrive. However all the racing was completed in a gentle force 1-2.5, with some good tides running.

Saturday was dominated by Alan Burrell who claimed 1,1,4 and Nick Beloe 2,2,2. The minor places were shared around between Simon Childs, who won race 3, and Lawrence Crispin, a recent recruit to the class, who bagged a couple of thirds.

Sunday dawned with a very gentle breeze, and Beloe continued the good form posting a 1,2,1 scoreline, Childs improved to score 2,1,2 while Burrell suffered slightly on the congested, strongly port-biased start lines. Phil Argent switched sails and had a much better day posting a couple of 3rd places.

An excellent weekend of close competitive racing was had throughout the fleet despite the light conditions. Fantastic food and drink at the Fulchers on Saturday evening was greatfully received by all!

Roll on the 2003 season!!
