OKs go carbon

Moves to enhance performance from next April

As of next April, the OK class moves to carbon masts! The recent annual ISAF
meeting passed the classes proposal to move to carbon masts. This is expected to enhance the performance of the boat, whilst the rule has been written to keep costs low so keeping the OK as one of the cheapest singlehanders around (open meeting winning boats cost as little as £1,000!)

In the short-term, carbon masts will carry correctors to ensure that there is little performance difference between carbon & metal masts. This will prevent the creation of a 2 tier fleet.

All 15 countries that sail OKs will move to carbon simultaneously after the 2003 Worlds in Goa. This will make the 2004 Worlds at Parkstone in the UK interesting!!

Proctor Masts are already working with North Sails and some of the leading British OK sailors to develop a fast, affordable mast.
