Mixed cat class for Round Texel
The Zwitserleven Round Texel Race 2011, is to introduce a mixed multihull class, in response to the decision made at the ISAF Mid-Year meeting in St Petersburg of the mixed-multihull event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Edwin Lodder, Race Co-ordinator commented: "As the leading multihull event, it is important to show the world that we fully support the choice of mixed-multihull sailing and that we wish to promote it. We hope to demonstrate that there are many male / female combinations, which proves that mixed-multihull is a logical choice."
The 34th Zwitserleven Round Texel Race takes place on Saturday, 25 June. Currently, there are 209 pre-entries. This number is expected to rise further to over 500. In 2008, Carolijn Brouwer and Sebbe Godefroid (BEL) were the only mixed-multihull team at the Olympic Games in China. For the Zwitserleven Sailing Week, Brouwer is registered to sail with Wouter Samama (NED). The duo will sail aboard a 16ft Viper and is the favorite for mixed-multihull ranking.
The Zwitserleven Sailing Week amalgamates multiple championships and races. The event will commence on Monday, 20 June with the World Cup Slalom Windsurfing and Nacra Championships, including the 2011 Nacra Infusion World Championship. The Nacra races last until Wednesday morning, when that afternoon the Dutch Open Catamaran Championship begins. The Dutch Catamaran Champions will be crowned on Friday, 24 June. In addition, the Shorttrack Races will take place on Wednesday until Friday. For the recreational sailors there are tours on Thursday and Friday. The windsurfers have their finals on Saturday, 25 June the day on which hundreds of catamarans will sail around Texel.
Besides the title sponsor Zwitserleven, the Round Texel race is also made possible by the following sub sponsors VVV Texel, Paal 17 events, Treffers / Kappa, Teso, W&H Leibherr, TNG Watches and Mondriaan Onderwijsgroep.
