RYA continues Girls4Gold program in 2012
The next wave of the RYA’s Girls4Gold programme has now been announced for the 2012 racing season and event organisers are urging all female sailors interested in taking part to apply in time for the first weekend at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on 21-22 April 2012.
Building on the success of last year’s programme the RYA will be running four Women’s Skiff training weekends. Ex-Laser 5000 sailor Tracey Covell will be heading up the training aimed at developing all-female teams competing in high-performance classes in the UK.
Weekends are open to teams and individual over the age of 18. Sailors are encouraged to borrow RS800s to take part but other Twin Trapeze Asymmetric classes are also welcome. Sailors will be asked to contribute £20 per person per weekend to training costs.
Harvey Hillary, Skandia Team GBR National Racing Coach, commented: “The RYA’S ‘Girls4Gold’ programme allows teams and individuals from all backgrounds access to quality coaching targeted at High Performance Skiff Sailing.
“First and foremost it’s about getting more all-female teams racing in UK so this is a perfect opportunity for sailors transitioning from Youth sailing or looking to get Twin-Wire asymmetric racing for the first time. For sailors with an eye on Rio 2016, this is a must to learn the skills required to race this new breed of sailboat.”
Hillary concluded: “Last year the programme was a huge success with four teams progressing on to train alongside the Skandia Team GBR Development Squads in the Winter Training programme. One surprise last year was the abundance of crews that took part, so this year we’re particularly keen to see trapezing helms apply, even if they don’t have a crew.”
The RYA’s ‘Girls4Gold’ training dates are as follows:
21st – 22nd April, WPNSA
19th – 20th May, WPNSA
1st - 2nd June, Datchet (TBC)
7th - 8th July, TBC
