Danish duo clean up in the 49erFX

Palamos Christmas Race kicks off

The 38th GAES Christmas Race kicked off on Spain's Bay of Palamós with around 300 teams competing, while the 29ers will start racing tomorrow. The other classes sailed today’s races with a light southwest Garbí breeze, 6 to 12 knots.

With three races sailed in the Laser Standard, Spanish sailor Jesús Rogel leads overall with a fourth place and two wins while second place is also for Spain with Joaquin Blanco, who won today’s first race, finishing second and fifth in the other two races. Two point difference between the Spanish sailors while at more distance, third place overall is for British sailor Lorenzo Chiavarini.

France dominated the 470 Men class with Pierre Leboucher and Nicolas Le Berre in the lead with a third and a first place, followed in second by Spaniards Onán Barreiros and Juan Curbelo four points from the leader and then team mates Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp third.

The Finn class sailed three races with Estonian sailor Dennis Karpak at the top of the standings with a seventh and two second places followed by two time Olympic medallist, Slovenian Vasilij Zbogar with two sixth places and a victory in today’s races. Third place held by Spanish sailor Alejandro Muscat.

There were also tight results in the 470 Women with only between one point separating the leading German team of Annika Bochmann and Karoline Göltzer and British sailors Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter in second and the Swiss team of Linda Fahrni and Maja Siegenthaler holding third after today’s two races.

Belorussian sailor Tatiana Drozdovskaya, second in the ISAF Laser Radial ranking leads the fleet with two seconds and one bullet today, but has a strong rival in second place with Poland's Agata Barwinska who finished fourth, first and second today. Barwinska is tied in second place with Spanish sailor Mònica Azón who won the first race and finished third in the other two races.

The lead in the 49er class is held by Finland's Lauri Lehtinen and Kalle Bask who finished fourth and fifth in today’s races followed by Beijing 2008 gold medallist Dane Jonas Warrer and crew Peter Orsted, who won the first race, but only managed a tenth place in race two. One point behind, third place is held by Spain's Carlos Paz with a sixth and eighth place today.

Danish duo Ida Marie Baad Nielsen and Marie Thusgaard Olsen were the indisputable leaders in the 49erFX fleet winning all three races of the day. Danes Lin Ea Cenholt and Anders hold second.

Clear dominance was also seen in the 420 fleet with British team Max Clapp and Joseph Burns taking the lead followed by Spaniards Manuel Palacín and Alfredo Dávila and Poles Ewa Romaniuk and Kaarzyna Goralska.
