Owen Clark Design Group get Open 50 contract

The boat's for Victor Yazykov

News from the Owen Clark Design Group is that they have signed a contract for a new Open 50 with Victor Yazykov, who sailed the 40 foot Wind of Change in the 1998-99 Around Alone. Merfyn Owen - who has worked on both the Team Group 4 and Kingfisher projects - will direct the design work. The boat is being built for the Around Alone 2002 and the Vendee Globe 2004 with a launch planned for February 2002.
The group have just added another member to the team, Alison Marshall joined Merfyn Owen, Allen Clarke and Duncan Barr in November, having arrived from the Liverpool firm of architects, Shed KM. Alison graduated from Manchester University in 1994, where she gained an honours BA in architecture. She is highly experienced in three-dimensional CAD drafting as well as the many disciplines involved in interior design. The group feel her particular experience, perspective and knowledge should be seen as an indication of the emphasis to be placed in the future on gaining cruising yacht commissions.

Ian Munslow’s Owen Clark designed Mini-transat boat continues to progress towards next year's race despite being crashed into by another boat, while Ian was down in Les Sables helping with the final preparation on Kingfisher. But it's being fixed, and should be back out in a week or so sporting a smart light blue paint job courtesy of Stig McDonald. With the addition of an NKE pilot system thanks to sponsor Sonardyne, and a new fractional spinnaker and storm headsail coming, Ian should be sailing by Christmas. He plans to take a trip down to La Rochelle to measure and qualify as soon as the weather looks settled - the summer then.
