One Ton Cup Corel 45 World Championship - Day 2

A better day for the Brits as Stead comes through to third

Corel 45 fleet racing off MarseilleThe second day of the One Ton Cup provided the fleet with some classic Mediterranean weather and fabulous racing. The race committee managed to fit in all three scheduled races and catch up with a missed race from yesterday. All this in sunshine and a breeze that built to an east-north-easterly of over 25 knots - paradise regained.
Things started a little quieter with a gun at 11.48 in a 10 knot north-westerly. Serono, skippered by Olympic Gold medallist Jochen Schumann, came firing out of the line. But it was Jeremy Robinson aboard Chris Little's Bounder that got the first beat right, snagging a right-hand shift and rounding the top mark in the lead. Robinson held his advantage to the end, fending off Thierry Peponnet in Cavale Blue. The Brits also came third, in the shape of Tony Buckingham's Yet another Coup.

Race two followed in short order, with the wind building. This one also belonged to a British boat, Ado Stead aboard Graham Walker's Indulgence. Stead, with his Tour Voile winning partner Tim Powell again at the wheel, watched Faster K-Yote II come through from behind to take second, with Cavale Bleu still showing remarkable consistency in this glittering fleet, with a third. The breeze was still building for the third race - cranking in at 25 knots. And in these conditions the red flags started to flutter. Cavale Bleu was having one of those can't-do-anything-wrong days and scored a race win, Faster K-Yote II another solid second, and finally showing some form was Atalanti, with Kenny Read aboard.

A squall stalled the start of the fourth race, but at 17.30 (why do all French race committees like to keep you out there until it's dark?) they banged off a gun for another. With the wind down to a puffy 7 to 15 knots. Kenny Read was coming good at this time of day (maybe it's the jet lag), and Atalanti took a race win - but the big loser was Faster K-Yote II, who was over the line at the start. Those extra OCS points gives the overall lead to Cavale Bleu, followed by Atalanti X and Faster K-Yote II. Stead, Walker and Indulgence are joint third, but need a couple more top threes to pull themselves into full contention.
