Vendee Globe - 1130 - 20/12/00

Mark Chisnell reports as the leaders hit the wall

Wednesday December 20th 2000, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Weather at 0613, 21/12/00The latest forecast for Thursday morning (left) shows that blocking low pressure now in place in the Great Australian Bight, with Desjoyeaux heading for its southern edge, where he will find strong easterly headwinds - not good and not fast.

There is breeze with a better direction further south, where he will find a decent southerly to reach in. But the wind speed drops fast to the south of that low pressure, and it will be like walking a tight-rope, trying to get the boat in the best place for decent pressure and a reasonable wind direction. And this situation is far from static - which is a bit like someone standing at one end of the tight-rope and jiggling it.
In the forecast for midnight Friday (below), we can see that the low pressure has deepened further and started to move south-east. Meanwhile, the monster low that is bringing the fleet up to Desjoyeaux and Jourdain has spun off a satellite system which is now heading north-east - creating a high pressure ridge between the two.
