Vendee Globe - 1230 - 29/12/00By Saturday morning (right) it will have got up a serious head of steam and will start to move east. We've seen this movie before, and Desjoyeaux needs to get into the strong south-westerly breeze on the north-western sector of this low pressure before it saddles up and rides out.
If Desjoyeaux does so, that accordion is going to start to expand again and at speed, as Jourdain, Ellen and Thiercelin try to cross the - albeit weakening - high pressure ridge between these two low pressure systems.
At the same time that big old low pressure is going to fill and drift north, and that won't help the pack aft of Ellen either.
But as in Britain - if you don't like the weather, stick around and it'll change. And once again that low pressure that's been hanging around like a gatecrasher at a party is going to reenter, stage left. From somewhere this system is going to find the energy to once again deepen and move east.

Please note that two different methods of calculating the Distance to Finish are being used, one by Virtual Spectator and one by the Vendee Globe Race Office, we will try to always make it clear which we are using!
