Mark Chisnell reports as Desjoyeaux continues to open up his lead

Friday December 15th 2000, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
Behind him, the other low pressure system - around which the front of the fleet is now clustered - has deepened considerably, spinning up behind the fleet and replacing the high pressure blues with the low pressure nerves. There is plenty of breeze with this system, and it's all set to drift down the track to the east over the next couple of days, providing relatively straight-forward conditions - if you can regard a Southern Ocean storm in such fashion.

Weather at 10.30, 17/12/00In the forecast for Sunday morning (left) we can see that this system is now all the way to the right of the image. It should drag everyone east at pace for the next 48 hours, or however long they can hang on to it.

We can probably expect Michel Desjoyeaux to lose a little as the pack bring the best breeze in this new system up to him, but after that it'll be more about keeping the boat upright, fast and safe than weather strategy. It's a physically testing weekend coming up.
