Transatlantic mono-hull record broken!

Bernard Stamm blasts Mari Cha's record in an Open 60

Tuesday February 6th 2001, Author: Mark Chisnell, Location: United Kingdom
The World Sailing Speed Record Council today timed Bernard Stamm's Open 60, Armor Lux, at a new crewed mono-hull transatlantic record.
Stamm and his team crossed the line at Lizard Point in Cornwall, England at 1134 and 35 seconds GMT on the morning of the 6th February. If ratified, this will set the new record from Ambrose Light, New York to England at eight days, 20 hours and 56 minutes.

A 35 year old Swiss, Bernard Stamm was competing in the Vendee Globe, but retired early with autopilot problems. This remarkable crossing has beaten the record previously held by the 147 foot Mari Cha by about three hours, storming across the North Atlantic in mid-winter gales. Stamm and his boys have gone into Falmouth where hopefully the locals are helping them celebrate - stunning!
