Newly-appointed chairman of the Olympic Steering Group, Barry Parkin, told madforsailing of his own plans for this year. "I’ve not got too much time to put into it, so I’ve chosen classes that I already know fairly well," he said, after a day of almost windless racing at Datchet Water, where he won a drifter against a large fleet of Flying Fifteens.
Sailing with his wife, Sue, herself a three-time 470 Olympian, Parkin is trying to reacquaint himself with the small keelboat that he has not raced for eight years. Next month he heads down to South Africa for the class world championships, and he does not relish the prospect of hiking. "I’ve not done it for quite a few years, and Sue has been trapezing for the past 20 years, so it could be hard work."

Parkin is also putting together a campaign for the Etchells 22 world championships in Lymington later this year. Parkin plans to sail with Gary Lane and Richard Sydenham, his former team mate from Andy Beadsworth’s Soling campaign. "Obviously, I’m waiting to find out if Richard can get the time out to race with me, as he has Admiral’s Cup and other duties that come first," he said.
