Club Med is storming towards Marseille whilst Warta-Polpharma battles with 85-knot winds

Club Med had little more than 250 miles to the finish of The Race this morning. As she passed the Balearic islands at about 16 knots average speed, the pundits were predicting the big blue cat would take the winner's gun in Marseille around midnight tonight.

Innovation Explorer is travelling more quickly at 23 knots and has closed to 919 miles of the leader. She has covered 556 miles in the last 24 hours, but nothing short of catastrophe is going to take the lead off Grant Dalton and his Club Med team now.

More than 5000 miles behind, Team Adventure is passing the Argentinian coast, while back at the bottom of the world Warta-Polpharma is encountering winds of 85 knots. Tony Bullimore is one man who might actually envy Warta-Polpharma, sitting as he is in a Southern Ocean doldrums. He has covered just 77.5 miles in the last 24-hour period, an average speed of 3.2 knots.

Standings (at 0700 GMT, 3/3/01)
1 Club Med 262.3 nm to the finish
2 Innovation Explorer +919.9 nm
3 Team Adventure +6067.5 nm
4 Warta Polpharma +6697.7 nm
5 Team Legato +9452.8 nm
