Barker and Hiscocks to miss $10000 event

Ian Barker and Simon Hiscocks will not be able to defend their title at the 2001 Subaru Gorge Games

With time is running out to register for the 2001 Subaru Gorge Games' 49er Sailing event this July 20-22, in Hood River, Oregon, the 49er winners from last year, Ian Barker and Simon Hiscocks, will not be able to spare the time from their crowded schedule to defend the title.

Barker and Hiscocks, upwind in Sydney HarbourAs well as their 49er racing on the international regatta and championship circuit Ian is now very much involved in the Farr 40 scene and will also be putting together a Star campaign from September.

The 49er event is part of the multi-sport Gorge Games, which this year will include an Adventure Race over an 85 mile course involving mountaineering, trekking, mountain biking, rappelling and kayaking over a 24 hour period. The sailing event normally involves 15 to 20 entrants sailing 49ers racing on the river in continuos 20 to 25 knot winds, around four marks forming a windward/leeward course. This is sailed three times round from a 'dynamic' start.

If you are in the States highlights from the competition will be seen on NBC national telecast of the Subaru Gorge Games Sunday, August 26, 2001 from 12:30 -1:30 pm EST and Sunday, September 2, 2001 from 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm.
