Another brick in the wall
Each of the British-based fleets have been holding their own qualification series and in the south, the South Coast Championship, the Southern Championship and the Red Funnel series have allowed the fleets to tune and compete against one another.
Front runners in the UK Nationals should include Tim Law, recent winner of the Southern Championship, which he won ahead of Barry Parkin and Graham Bailey. Another name to watch will be Stuart Childerly, winner of the South Coast Champs beating Law and Bailey. Also from the Cowes fleet is the highly-ranked Ante Razmilovic.
Ian Southworth from the Lymington fleet will be a threat and other names to look for from there include Ray Mitchell and Barry Dunning.
Representing the other UK fleets at the championship will be Alan Marr and Malcolm Wootton from the Clyde fleet and Gary Harrison from the Burnham fleet.
All the action will take place off Cowes in the Solent, organised by the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, over three days from the 29 June, with committee boat starts and windward/leeward courses.
The outcome will be keenly watched by the world wide Etchells fleets for signs of who is likely to be leading the British opposition when the world's top crews arrive for the World Championships - crews that will include some of the great names of international yacht racing; Jud Smith, John Bertrand, Dennis Conner, Dirk Kneulman and reigning World Champion Vince Brun, all USA. Plus Jan Scholten (AUS) and maybe Colin Beashel (AUS) former double champion who recently returned to the class in Australia.
