LG Flatron pips Olympic Group in 60-knot 'match race' into Wellington

Conrad Humphreys and his crew on LG Flatron ground down their opposition to take the winner’s gun into Wellington at the end of Leg 3 of the BT Global Challenge. Despite the 60 knot winds in their final approach, Olympic Group and LG Flatron were racing flat out.

Humphreys told QuokkaSailing: "We were just hanging in there. It was a wild, wild race. We were match racing in 60 knots of wind. Gradually we just saw this little sail in front of us. We just had a little bit more speed, it was absolutely tremendous. I was amazed we pushed past in those sort of conditions. I have never seen anything like it. We had knockdowns not from the waves but from the wind."

Humphreys said his prime concern was to stick with Compaq and Quadstone, his closest rivals in the overall points. But when he caught sight of Olympic Group in the lead, he thought he’d have a go for the win. Considering they started the day 15 miles behind Olympic Group, LG Flatron had her work cut out. But as they ground down the leader, the team on LG Flatron were handed an added gift when Olympic Group’s No. 3 Yankee shredded. Humphreys slipped past and into a lead of eight miles.

So LG Flatron was home first, then Olympic Group, with Compaq taking the final podium position. The rest of the fleet are still making their way to the New Zealand capital. You can get all the latest updates from the BT Global Challenge website .
