IRC hits new peak

Bumper crop of ratings from RORC's Lymington office

Monday July 2nd 2001, Author: James Boyd, Location: United Kingdom

The RORC Rating Office in Lymington has announced that the number of boats rated under IRC is the highest ever for the mid-year point. At the end of June, 2460 boats held current IRC rating certificates and the Rating Office believes this total could reach 3000 by the end of the year.

It should be noted that these figures exclude IRC certificates issued by the UNCL in Paris, which has issued around 1900 certificates so far this year.

In the UK, ratings have been boosted by it being a Fastnet year and a bumper entry in the Hoya Round the Island Race. Several yachts will be competing under IRC in the America's Cup Jubilee in August.

Overseas, IRC continues to grow in Australia and the Telstra Sydney to Hobart Race will have IRC classes again this year. IRC is steady in Europe and southeast Asia, with several major regattas using IRC as their main rating system.

South African Sailing is just entering its second year of IRC racing and we hope that enthusiasm for the system will continue to grow in that area.
