Geant dismasts

Latest in a spate of trimaran disasters. See Gilles Martin-Ragets photos
Michel Desjoyeaux's new 60ft trimaran Geant dismasted yesterday afternoon between her homeport of Port la Foret and the Glénans islands. At the time the brand new trimaran was sailing in 25 knot northwesterly winds and a flat sea when a gust made her accelerate. Suddenly the mast broke in two roughly 10m above the deck. The crew is safe and were able to recover the complete rig. A majority of the sails were saved and Desjoyeaux said that there was little damage to the boat. At present it is too early to say why the dismasting happened, but it is the latest in a spate of trimaran dismastings. Most recent was Alain Gautier's new trimaran Foncia 2 and before this it was the turn of Jean-Luc Nelias' Belgacom and Bertrand de Broc's Banque Covefi. While the indication was that there were problems with masts built by Espace Composites, Geant's mast was built by CDK Composites in Port la Foret, who also built the platform.
