Following their dismasting in the recent Larmor Plage Open 60 Grand Prix, Mike Golding's Ecover will not be taking part in this weekend's Regate du Rubicon. Instead she will be entered in the Round the Island Race on 22 June.
Following the incident the mast is in one piece and is being transported to Caen in northern France where thermal imaging tests will determine the extent of the damage. Although ostensibly there is no damage to the spar, carbon fibre laminates can often suffer invisible internal damage. If it is found to be okay, any necessary repairs the mast will be load tested to ensure it has the same inertia qualities, or stiffness, as it had when it was built.
During this process Mike, Groupe Finot and the spar's manufacturers Alubcarbone will take the opportunity to look at further improvements in the overall performance of the rig to enhance the performance of the boat.
Ecover is at present being motored to JMV in Cherbourg, where she was built where the repairs to the deck will be undertaken. She will then go to Caen to have her mast restepped in time for some sea trials.
