Bizarre yachting accident

An extraordinary tale of train versus trimaran carnage

Thursday January 10th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: United States
According to a report in The Times Herald for the Port Huron, Fort Gratiot, Marysville and Lexington area up by the Great Lakes in the US, an extraordinary incident took place just before Christmas when a runaway train carrying chemicals, lost its brakes going into a bend and careered off its tracks.

Like something out of the Hollywood disaster movie the train derailed and caught fire as it ploughed into a warehouse where a number of yachts were laid up. Among the yachts was Earth Voyager, Ray Howe's Port Huron to Mackinac race winning trimaran. Ploughing through the warehouse the train demolished the aft end of the 60ft Walter Greene-designed yacht's three hulls.

After the incident it was deemed that the mast and one hull would have to be completely written off, while the rest was repairable.

That would be one insurance claim, I'd like to see...
