Thursday May 2nd 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: Australasia
The leading boats in the Tranz Tasman two handed race are closing on Auckland having rounded Cape Reinga at the north of New Zealand's North Island.

The last sched showed race leader Anthony Day's Sayer 43 Sayernara sailing in 15 knots southeasterlies with 147.31 miles to go and an ETA into Auckland of 0909 tomorrow morning. Day leads from Vince Lamond's Spirit of Down Underwho is three hours behind on the ETAs.

A closer battle is going on between Drina, Anteater and Touchstone who are all close together. Drina at 50 feet has the waterline advantage but as skipper Mike Thurston forecast before the race started, she's twice the weight of her rivals and as conditions lighten, he expects them to sail round her.

Currently Touchstone is leading Anteater by six miles, while Drina has a mile lead over Touchstone.

Both Minis and John Biddlecombe's Open 60 Liberty have retired from this race.
