Ainslie takes the wheel

Ben Ainslie embarks on his keelboat helming career with the IC45 Barlo Plastics in Palma

Thursday February 15th 2001, Author: Andy Rice, Location: United Kingdom
Ben Ainslie steps up to the wheel for his first serious competition as a keelboat helmsman on Friday, for the second three-day regatta of the Clean Marine IC 45 Winter Series 2001, organised by the Club de Mar Mallorca.
Back from some training with the America's Cup syndicate OneWorld, Ainslie picks up where Ian Walker left off last month, having successfully guest-helmed the IC45 Barlo Plastics to a regatta win at the opening event.

Skipper Adrian Stead will again be calling tactics, and had this to say: "The first event in Palma proved to be a good regatta to get back into the swing of things and of course it was great to secure our first victory of the season. I'm looking forward to sailing with Ben Ainslie for the first time on the IC 45 on our return to Palma. We'll be joined as well by Toby Iles and Stuart Childerley from the Barlo Plastics Mumm 36 and the weekend's performance will also be boosted by sailor Chris Main who will be on mainsheet.

Another keelboat rookie who raced with Stead at the last Palma event, Hugh Styles, is currently away on Olympic Tornado duty, down in South Africa at the World Championship where he lies fourth after the first two days of mega-breeze.
