British Admiral's Cup contender launches at Key West

Adrian Stead to call the shots for Mark Heeley in the inshore races

Mark Heeley flies out to Miami on Monday 8th January to take delivery of his brand new Farr 40. "The boat went in the water yesterday and we’ll be racing it next week at Key West," he told madforsailing as he waited at the airport. "We haven’t decided what to call the boat yet, so it is for the time being, ‘Boat with no name’."
Heeley is one of the top amateur owner/drivers on the Farr 40 scene, and as such, has attracted a quality team to race with him in America, and in the Solent later this year for what will be hotly contested trials for the Farr 40 slot in the British Admiral’s Cup team. His line-up for Key West includes Mel Coleman, Guy Salter, Toby Iles, Greg Wells, Duncan McDonald, Mike Broughton and Adrian Stead on tactics.

Stead will be racing with Heeley for the inshore races at Key West, but steps off for the final offshore race to call tactics for American Jim Richardson on Barking Mad, with whom he won the Farr 40 world championships a couple of years back. Stead will be keen to see Richardson win the US trials for the Admiral’s Cup. After the first trial before Christmas, Barking Mad was trailing Philippe Zahn’s Pegasus by the narrowest of margins.
