With the Swan Europeans, Berthon Source, America's Cup Jubilee, Farr 40 Worlds, IRC Nationals and several other big events coming up UK Sailmakers have announced that they will be running some racing practice.

UK Sailmakers recently held a practice day for the Farr 40 fleet which they say was well received. The format for the latest practices involves lots of starts as these are so crucial to the overall result in a yacht race.
They will begin with a rolling sequence, with three consecutive starts, with the last being a short windward-leeward race. They plan to run this sequence three or four times so ending up with plenty of starts and three or four short windward-leewards.

The practice is to be held this coming Saturday 19 May. The second will be on Saturday 26 May.

The details:

Time : 11:00 am
Location : Hill Head buoy (Solent)
Starting system :

Start One : five minute gun, four minute gun, one minute gun, start
Break away after one minute sailing, return to start area

Start Two : five minute gun, four minute gun, one minute gun, start
Break away after one minute sailing, return to start area

Start Three : five minute gun, four minute gun, one minute gun, start
Sail to weather mark, run down and round leeward buoy, sail upwind for one minute, return to start area

This sequence will be run three or four times or more, depending on conditions.

Communication will be through VHF, channel to be decided on the day.

The idea is to get good at boat positioning in the critical one and a half minutes prior to the start and to work on crew manoeuvres around the marks on every third start.
