Russell Coutts has secured the services of Australian Grant Simmer as design coordinator for the Swiss challenge for the America’s Cup in 2003. Coutts commented from Switzerland: "It’s fantastic that we have convinced Grant to join our team. He brings considerable experience to all areas of our programme both in terms of sailing and design."
Simmer is best known as the navigator of Australia II when she stole the Cup from Newport back in 1983. His new contract will require Simmer to move with his family from Sydney to the challenge headquarters near Lausanne, Switzerland. But Simmer has said he will maintain his strong business links with North Sails in Australia, and that he will continue to campaign on the international ocean racing circuit with Australian owners.

Simmer commented: "I really wanted to work with this team. The Swiss are serious and enthusiastic about this campaign. I believe the syndicate has an excellent chance to be successful in 2003." He plans to be resident in Switzerland by January.
