Jesper Bank changes original decision not to compete in Auckland

Double Olympic champion Jesper Bank is to compete in the America’s Cup with the Swedish Victory Challenge, according to the New Zealand Herald.
The Dane, who won gold in the Soling in Barcelona and Sydney, was not interested in competing in the Cup originally but explained his change of heart. "What made me change my mind and join Victory Challenge is that it's not all about committing myself to sailing," he said.

"I'm also going to be part of the management group for the syndicate and I will be able to influence the design of the boat, and the recruits. It will be just as interesting for me if I'm skipper, helmsman or tactician."

The syndicate has a choice of three top helmsmen - Bank, campaign manager Mats Johansson and top Swedish match racer Magnus Holmberg.

Bank said he was also swayed by the healthy financial situation of the syndicate, although the Swedes have not yet submitted their US$150,000 entry fee, due by March 2001. In the meantime, they will continue to train
