Australia II is going to compete in the America's Cup Jubilee this summer, according to an announcement on Perth ABC radio station yesterday. John Longley, who was involved in the white 12-metre's America's Cup victory 18 years ago, said sufficient funding had been arranged to allow the yacht to be brought over to Cowes this year to sail in the event.
A major sponsor would be announced at Royal Perth Yacht Club as soon as the formalities of the funding were completed, he said. The Ben Lexcen-designed yacht is now owned by the Western Australian Museum
(WA Government), and will be sailed by her original Cup-winning crew. She will be shipped over, re-rigged with a new mast and rigging in England, and sailed in the Solent area, as there is insufficient time to rig and sail her in Australia prior to the event.
