Glyn Charles Pursuit Race
In aid of the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST) and the RYA's Sailability, the event has now become an annual fixture for sailors from all classes and with a range of abilities. Thousands of pounds are raised each year during the event that starts from Glyn's old club Bosham, towards his home town of Emsworth.
Glyn was lost overboard during the tragic 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. An Olympic sailor and Admiral's Cup helmsman, Glyn was a great personality and friend to many people. The Glyn Charles Pursuit Race was organised as a way to remember him and provide an opportunity to raise money for a charity that he was keen to support.
Boats can enter on the day at Bosham Sailing Club for just £5 for a single-hander and £10 for a two-man boat or above.
The first start will be at 11.00am from Bosham Quay and the finish at 13.00 in Chichester Harbour.
The prize giving will take place at 17.00 at BSC. As event sponsors, Sunsail have generously donated a holiday for two in the Mediterranean again this year for the winning boat. Numerous other prizes, including a new wet suit from O'Neill, have also been donated for the runners up.
Event organiser David Acres encourages people to join in; "The race attracts club racers, Olympic sailors from the past and present as well as old friends of Glyn and his family. It should prove a good way of catching up with your mates as well as an opportunity to raise money for two worthwhile charities."
