New hope in search for sailing sponsors
Paddy Murphy is hoping he has the answer. His global experience within the financial market has given him the cutting edge in corporate contacts and know-how. With the launch of his new web site, sailing-sponsorship.com set for May, madforsailing investigates a potential light at the end of the tunnel.
"The idea was to set up a meeting place both on the web and the telephone for sailors who are looking for sponsors and vice versa," said Murphy. "That can range from individuals who want a sponsor for themselves, to cover a full campaign, sponsorship for boats and equipment, and sponsors for events such as open meetings and national championships.
"Whilst doing this the web site will be promoting sailing as a healthy and clean sport. We are hoping to attract large and medium corporate sponsors who are currently investing in other areas such as motor sports, to divert some of the huge sums of money currently being spent into sailing. There is a lot of money out there."
Murphy continued: "Even though the economy is slowing down, people like Ellen MacArthur and events such as The Race and the BT Global Challenge have been great for attracting corporate sponsorship to sailing. Our task is to try and get the corporate budget holders to loosen the strings and give some money to sailing, whether that be to help with clothing, equipment, flight and ferry tickets and accommodation around sailing events, to any other form of financial assistance.
"The difficulty for sailors is knowing who to contact. There are lots of opportunities out there and as it stands sailing is a very strong story that currently isn't being told very well."
sail-sponsorship.com is currently being tested and aims to be launched in May. madforsailing will keep you informed of developments.
