Scheidt signs for Volvo

Ben Ainslie's arch rival becomes Volvo Ocean Race's ambassador for Brazil

Robert Scheidt, the Brazilian Laser sailor whom Ben Ainslie pipped for gold in the Sydney Olympics, has signed up as ambassador for the Volvo Ocean Race in his home country.
Scheidt's job will be to raise awareness of the event, and he has already made his first media appearance in front of 40 journalists. For his troubles, he gets to drive a V70 Cross Country vehicle, decked out in official Volvo Ocean Race colours, for the full duration of his contract from March 2001 to March 2002.

The 27-year-old, who became Olympic champion in the Laser in 1996, will write articles about the race, starting with the Southampton departure and covering all legs. He will also spend a lot of time playing host to customers in the Volvo Ocean Race Hospitality Centre during the race's stopover in Rio, over three weeks during February and March next year.

He'd probably rather be sailing, but at least Volvos don't look like your dad's car any more.
