Fujifilm in trouble again

A crack in Fujifilm's mast put an end to her hopes of a trouble-free regatta.

Sailing upwind in around 12 knots of breeze Fujifilm had to pull out of race four and it is not known if she will compete on the final day. Meanwhile, Groupama scored her first win in Sardinia. In a race plagued by huge shifts and winds from twelve knots to nothing, boat speed counted for little. Position on the race course was everything. While the faster, higher pointing boats pulled away on the first leg, the wind died almost completely at the weather mark allowing those behind to pull right back into the running.

If any measure were needed as to just how light the wind eventually became it is as well to point out that the leading boats took over four hours to complete a race of less than 35 miles - and this for boats regularly topping 20 knots in any kind of decent breeze. By the last leg, some boats were sailing with gennakers while others were sailing upwind with solent jibs. While one boat was doing 15 knots, others were stationary. All in all, very unsatisfactory racing. Don't read too much into the results of this one.
