Footballers have been doing it in the dark for a long time, but now a group of sailors in America have taken to competing under floodlights too. Houston Yacht Club laid on the first ever Vanguard 15 Lunar Regatta, according to a report by Jonathan Goddard on Scuttlebutt.
A fleet of 13 one-design dinghies raced in a cold 20-knot breeze, around a course in what would have been the pitch black of night, save for the stadium lights erected along the jetty, and the flashlights mounted on the boats.

Over a 100 spectators watched from the waterside or from the warmth of their cars, honking their horns at the fleet as they gybed within yards of the shore. The five-race event was won by college sailor Brent Marsden.
