120 entries at Merlin Salcombe Week

Changes to format allows increased entry to the always oversubscribed event

Last year Salcombe YC received 65 entries for the Merlin Rocket Week, six months before the event!

This year, by December 1st 2000 (the initial closing date) they had received 105 entries. Following the normal procedure, 92 were chosen from a hat and the rest put on the waiting list. This list has continued to grow as late entries have come through.

In order to attempt to help as many Merlin sailors as possible to enjoy Salcombe Merlin Week the class committee looked at various options and the membership were asked for their opinion.

The option most popular and now confirmed after talks with the Harbour Master and Roger Davies, Rear Commodore Sailing at Salcombe YC, is a variation of the existing four flights system.

With the entry limit raised to 120 there will be eight flights instead of the usual four and two start lines with morning and afternoon starts. After the first three days the boats are reallocated, according to the results, into Gold and Silver fleets and racing continues for a further three days with the same morning and afternoon start system.

This event has always been extremely popular with Merlin Rocket sailors and their families and it remains to be seen if this new system will accommodate all who want to attend. The Nationals are at Tenby this year, another very popular venue for the class, so will the Merlins return to the 100 club?

Salcombe Merlin Week is from 15 to 20th July. For entry details telephone the Salcombe YC on 01548 - 842593.
