Round the Island records confirmed .... the World Sailing Speed Record Council

Sir Peter Johnson of the World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) has confirmed to madforsailing that the 60ft trimaran Dexia Eure et Loir and of Mike Slade's maxi Skandia Life Leopardbroke not only the elapsed time records for the Hoya Round the Island Race, but the outright elapsed time World Records for this passage too.

That these records should be broken in this Round the Island Race could not have been timed better for the WSSCR as it was only in April that they changed the rules for round the Isle of Wight records and no longer distinguish between eastabout or westabout circumnavigations of it. To get the WSSRC recognised records the trimaran and Slade's maxi had to complete their circuits of the island not only through the official ISC finish line, but also had to recross the Royal Yacht Squadron line (from where they had started) in order to comply with the WSSRC's definition of the round the island course.

Until yesterday's race the fastest elapsed times for sailing round the Isle of Wight (outside of the race) were held by Steve Fossett's 60ft trimaran Lakota and Matt Humphries' Whitbread 60 Dolphin and Youth.
