Stuart Hudson tells Andy Rice about his plans for world championship success in the Czech Republic

Sailors from Spinnaker SC are prominent in the line-up of the team selected to represent Britain at the 2001 World Team Racing Championships in Brno, Czech Republic this August.
Spinnaker team mates Stuart Hudson and Steve Tylecote have been selected with their respective crews, Amy Smith and Sally Cuthbert, whilst Southampton University student Dom Johnson and Debs Kershaw make up the trio.

Hudson, who has also been nominated captain, told madforsailing he was "chuffed to bits", but said the mood in his house was mixed. "We’ve only just been told and my girlfriend Jane didn’t make selection." She sails with the third helm of the Spinnaker team Roger Morris, who was in contention for selection.

But the organisers of the world championships in the Czech Republic have just opened up places to second teams from countries around the world, so Morris and others will get a second shot at representing Britain in GBR 2.

Hudson said the important thing now was to continue getting to grips with the 420, which is what is being used at the worlds, but is not a common team racing boat in this country. "The American team are all collegiate sailors who team race in the 420s all the time, so they will be our toughest opposition," he said. The Kiwis will also be a difficult prospect, with just one helm change from their successful line-up of 2000.

Team racing will now dominate Hudson’s racing season, with other projects like National 12s and RS400s taking a back seat. The RS400 inland champion said he would probably be selling his boat because he couldn’t see himself making any time to race it this year. For now he is focused on getting the newly selected team sailing well together. "We’ll do the Wilson Trophy and UKTRA [the team racing national championships] together, but whether we’ll call ourselves GBR 1 or Spinnaker we don’t yet know.

"All of us our affiliated to the club in some way, including Dom through his University associations, so it is a possibility," he said.
