The British Nautical Awards also saw a particular honour for the British Olympic Team coach, John Derbyshire, who received from HRH The Princess Royal the YJA (Yachting Journalists Association) Special Award. This was made in recognition of his pivotal role in managing the most successful British sailing team ever fielded at an Olympic Games. The surprise presentation was made during a speech by HRH The Princess Royal, President of the Royal Yachting Association, at the Boat Show Ball at the London Hilton, Park Lane on Friday 5th January 2001.

John Derbyshire (44) from Emsworth, has been the RYA' s Olympic Manager since 1996, and is regarded within the organisation as the driving force behind Team GBR's most successful ever sailing Olympics, with three golds and two silver medals. As well as managing the successful Olympic sailing team in Sydney, John's skills also extend to coaching and include being the personal coach to Ben Ainslie, during both of his Olympic campaigns.
