RYA tweak match racing format

With added pre-race training prior to each qualifier

The Royal Yachting Assocation have revised the format for the 2002 RYA National Match Racing Championships.

In addition to the BUSA and Youth Championships, the series will consist of three qualifiers that will each accept a maximum of eighteen entries. The top two teams from each of the qualifiers will win a place in the finals, which will take place at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy on 20-22 September 2002.

As a part of the RYA's new initiative, training weekends will take place prior to the qualifiers to encourage less experienced teams (none of whom must have reached the quarter-final stage of a previous National Match Racing Champion) to receive top-level coaching from a professional RYA coach. This will enable teams to become more familiar with the First Class Eights, and they can brush up on their match racing skills prior to the all-important qualifier. The top eight teams from the Sunday’s racing at the training weekend will receive a subsidised entry to the subsequent qualifier.

The following calendar of dates and criteria has been set for the 2002 RYA Match Racing Championships:

6/7 April - BUSA National Match Racing Championships, Rutland Water Sailing Club

20/21 April - Training Event 1, Rutland Water Sailing Club

27/28 April - Qualifier 1, Rutland Water Sailing Club

13/14 July - Training Event 2, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

20/21 July - Qualifier 2, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

16/17/18 August - RYA Youth Match Racing Championships, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

31 August/1 Sept - Training Event 3, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

7/8 Sept - Qualifier 3, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

20/21/22 Sept - National Final, Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy

As each qualifier can only take a maximum of eighteen entries, we recommend that you get your entry forms in early. The training weekends are an ideal opportunity to bring your Match Racing and boat handling skills up a level, so don’t delay and get your entries in now.
