New talent is coming into the 49er class in the build-up to the next Olympic Games in Athens 2004. Olympic silver medallist Simon Hiscocks has been training with Chris Draper, who narrowly lost out to Nick Rogers for Olympic selection in the 470 last summer. Although Draper is new to helming from the trapeze, he is widely regarded as one of the most talented sailors of his generation.
Welshman DJ Edwards, the Fireball world and national champion, is also getting going on a 49er campaign. RS800 national champion Mark Asquith began sailing the 49er last year but has now secured sponsorship from electronic compass manufacturer Tacktick to do a full European circuit in the skiff this year. "We’ve been training down at Stokes Bay with Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks and we’re learning a lot in a short time," he told madforsailing.
