ONO leads offshore
Thursday October 10th 2002, Author: James Boyd, Location: none selectedThe wind continues to be the great and only problem here at the first edition of the IMS 600 World Championship organised by Monte Real Club Yates de Bayona and sponsored by Xunta de Galicia, Spanair and Slam.
For today, Tuesday, it was scheduled two windward/leeward and the long offshore race.
At 1100 hrs the fleet headed for the starting area, and though there were strong winds, the constant shifts made impossible to sail the planned windward/leeward courses, so finally at 1445 hrs the race committee gave the warning signal for the long offshore course of 70 miles with a light northwest wind of 6-7 knots.
At the outset it was Telefónica MoviStar leading the race, followed by Zorongo and MarNatura, but there were still many miles to run.
The wind shifted all long the race, and 10 miles after the start those at the rear positioned on the head of the race.
At the moment of this report the fleet was still had 50 miles to go, and the leaders are ONO and Siemens Mobile.
